We see it all around us, Outrageous marketing hype! In the webhosting industry this leads to what is referred to as overselling. Competing hosts trying to out do one another other by promising unrealistic features. And how does this affect your choice of webhost?
Unlimited Bandwidth
Bandwidth costs money. In fact you may have even noticed how many large ISP's are now starting to cap bandwidth usage. Why? Because it is not viable to offer unlimited bandwidth. It is neither realistic nor is it honest. It is a marketing ploy about posting bigger numbers than the competition in the hope of convincing unwary customers to choose them over the competition. Make no mistake, clients are herded onto bandwidth capped servers leaving you to fight for bandwidth with everyone else on that server.
Unlimited Disk Space
As with bandwidth disk storage also has an real cost. Promises of 500, 1000 or even unlimited gigs of storage for less $10 a month is an idle promise with no real substance. Their hope is you never actually use the space promised. If you due use it you will surely have violated some fine print somewhere on theri site so they can now terminate your account and leave back where you started.
So what to look out for:
- If it is too good to be true then it most likely is.
- Read the terms of service policy as they are often hiding 'gotcha' clauses about resource usage.
- Slow load times and poor performance are a direct result of overselling because your site is crammed onto an overburdened and network throttled server.
